Together with House of Design, NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences is leading the “Wad Gaat Om” (Wad Goes Around) project, aimed at combating plastic pollution in the Wadden Sea region. The university’s Sustainability in Hospitality and Tourism professorship plays a role in addressing environmental challenges through sustainable tourism practices and circular economy principles.
In the Wad Gaat Om project, the professorship will mainly be involved in Work Package 6 on communication and behavioural change. In this package in cooperation with dr Josefine Geiger from the University of Groningen, the professorship will guide a PhD student who will test behavioural intervention aimed at either preventing the use of single use plastic in the Wadden Sea area or enhancing cleaning actions such as the one of the ’’Jutfabriek’’ on Terschelling.
The project involves diverse partners, including businesses, government bodies, and educational institutions, to reduce plastic waste and develop lasting solutions, ensuring that the Wadden Sea becomes a global model for sustainable practices in tourism and environmental protection.
