How can Deposit Return Systems (DRS) encourage more effective recycling? Researcher Marie Hartmann, working at NHL Stenden Hospitality Group and a member of the Professorship Sustainability in Hospitality & Tourism, led by Elena Cavagnaro, explored this question. She uncovered key insights into how well-designed return systems can boost recycling rates and reduce waste.

One surprising finding? An ordinary shopping crate outperformed special donation bins in collecting deposit packaging! In addition, small nudges such as signs and verbal reminders proved highly effective in encouraging recycling behaviour.

What can businesses do?
By creating clear, easy-to-use return points and actively encouraging participation, businesses like cafés, hotels, and school cafeterias can successfully implement DRS—saving resources, reducing waste, and contributing to a circular economy.
