Wadden Gastronomy: Baseline Study among Visitors and Residents

For the Wadden Gastronomy programme, ETFI surveyed visitors and residents of the Dutch Wadden region about regional products. The insights help build a thriving culinary tradition connected to the Wadden Sea World Heritage.
Project duration: 2022
The challenge
The Wadden Gastronomy programme aims to establish a recognised culinary tradition in the Wadden region, carried by sustainable regional products and local entrepreneurs. Yet food is not the first thing people associate with the area.
To develop that tradition successfully, the programme needed to know how interested visitors and residents are in regional products, what they associate with them and how familiar they are with Wadden products.
Our approach
ETFI designed the study and analysed the results, working closely with Anke Arts, overall project leader of the Wadden Gastronomy programme. Fieldwork agency Veldwerk Optimaal surveyed visitors and residents across the Wadden region.
The impact
The baseline measurement revealed visitors’ and residents’ interest in, associations with, awareness of and experiences with Wadden regional products. These insights serve as building blocks for the wider Wadden Gastronomy programme and provide a reference point for measuring its progress over time.
