Tourist Information for the Future: The Gastvrij Fryslân Monitor

Governments, businesses and organisations in tourism and recreation want to work in a more data-driven way. This project turned existing data into clear insights for decisions about the future of the hospitality economy in Fryslân.
Project duration: 2022 – 2024
The challenge
The availability, quality and usability of data in tourism and recreation are often far from optimal, so choices are made on the basis of incomplete information.
The Province of Fryslân and its partners urgently needed reliable insights to develop tourism and recreation in balance with the living environment and local communities.
Our approach
ETFI acted as the project’s knowledge engine: gathering questions and needs from the field, identifying solutions and translating data into clear management information. ETFI worked closely with the Fries Sociaal Planbureau, which led the work team, Merk Fryslân and DataFryslân, in direct connection with the Province. Students contributed through assignments and guest lectures.
The impact
The results are presented in the Gastvrij Fryslân monitor: five dynamic dashboards on businesses, visitors, residents, destinations and policy. Based on existing sources such as Statistics Netherlands, the monitor provides a reliable overview of Fryslân’s hospitality economy.
