Nature Experiences on and along the Water in Flanders

Together with consultancy Ginder, ETFI researched for VISITFLANDERS whether Flanders has nature experiences on and along the water that are strong enough to market successfully in neighbouring countries.
Project duration: 2024 – 2025
The challenge
VISITFLANDERS wanted to develop a future perspective for nature experiences on and along the water in Flanders, and a policy for product development and promotion in neighbouring countries.
To position these experiences in its key origin markets, it first needed insight into the size of those markets, relevant trends and lessons from other regions.
Our approach
ETFI was responsible for the second phase of the research. Through desk research, ETFI estimated the size of the origin markets for nature experiences on and along the water in Wallonia, Hauts-de-France, Île-de-France, North Rhine-Westphalia and the Netherlands, and analysed the main European trends. The analysis was complemented with best practices in area marketing and sustainable nature experiences from regions such as Värmland (Sweden), Jura (France), Lusatia (Germany), the Oostvaardersplassen and the Lauwersmeer area (the Netherlands).
The impact
The research gave VISITFLANDERS a solid basis for its strategy to position nature experiences on and along the water in its origin markets, combining market estimates, trends and inspiring examples from across Europe. The project was completed in early 2025.
