Four Scenarios for the Visitor Economy after COVID-19

When COVID-19 brought the visitor economy to a standstill, the sector lost its view of the future. Together with CELTH, ETFI developed four scenarios to help destinations, businesses and organisations find new perspectives and face the future with confidence.
Project duration: 2020
The challenge
With events cancelled, travel restricted and planes grounded, revenues for tourism, recreation and hospitality businesses collapsed. Bankruptcies and unemployment loomed.
Above all, the uncertainty about how long the crisis would last left the sector without a clear perspective on what would come next.
Our approach
Together with researchers from the CELTH network, ETFI organised an online scenario planning workshop, drawing on a wide range of experts through interactive formats. ETFI researchers were responsible for the entire output. The scenario study was designed as a first step: a basis for dialogue among stakeholders in the visitor economy.
The impact
The project resulted in four scenarios for the visitor economy in 2025: Business as Usual, Survival of the Fittest, Business as Unusual and Responsible Tourism. The study was widely read and actively used in presentations and workshops, both in the Netherlands and abroad.
It was published in Dutch and English in academic, professional and popular articles. Read more: https://www.celth.nl/nl/projecten/vier-scenarios-voor-de-toekomst-van-de-bezoekerseconomie
